Sylvia Josephine Ratkovec was born on December 31, 1931 to Adolph and Rose (Pavel) Kobza on a farm in the Brainard area. She attended local schools, graduating from Brainard High School in 1949. On November 29, 1951 she married LeRoy Ratkovec at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard. Three children were born to this union. Sylvia was a past member of SS Mary & Joseph’s Church and PCCW.
Sylvia had several jobs throughout her life. She worked at Seward Dry Goods Store when they were first married. She went on to do caregiving to elders around town, child care, custodial work and working at the grocery store for many years. After retirement she enjoyed baking and embroidery work. Sylvia and LeRoy enjoyed traveling together and attending polka festivals with friends.
Sylvia is survived by her husband LeRoy, children Carolee (Lowell) Quinlan of Valparaiso, Sharon (Larry)Poskochil of Lincoln, David (Char) Ratkovec of Bradenton, Florida. Her brothers Andrew Kobza of David City and Marion Kobza of Dwight and 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Rose Kobza; brother, Emory; two sisters, Alice Graffis, Leona Divis; grandson, Troy Quinlan.
