Sheldon R. Behunin, 81, of Sargent, Nebraska passed away May 11, 2021. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Sheldon was born on January 27, 1940 in Bicknell, Utah and raised in Torrey, Utah, the gateway to Capitol Reef National Park, a place he loved and visited often. He was the oldest of five children. Hard work on the family farm and many great adventures with his family filled his childhood.
Sheldon was a true leader in high school. He was elected study body president of Richfield High School in 1957. He was a great scholar and athlete and continued to hold many school track and basketball records for several decades. He was also chosen to represent the Richfield community at multiple leadership and Rotary events and was recognized for his outstanding scholarship, athletic and leadership abilities.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S Army serving at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA where he attended Officer candidate school. He spent a significant portion of his military career in Frankfurt, Germany. He was a Senior Medical Specialist in the Army for most of his career and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and Expert Rifle M-14 Badge. He worked for General Henne in the 3rd Armored Division and was recognized multiple times for his outstanding leadership and bravery to this country.
Sheldon married Linda Pitts in 1966 in Georgia. Together they were blessed with three children: Michael (Jennifer), Shaun (Heather) and Lori (Jay). His children continue to live in Atlanta, GA and have raised five grandchildren (Will, Sarah Anne, Ansley, Jack and Mary Michael).
Sheldon was most known for his love of history, love of animals and love of the great state of Utah. He was also an avid antique collector and owned his own antique business. He loved flea markets, bottle hunting and great antique finds.
Sheldon is survived by his children, grandchildren, and brother Mickey Behunin. Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Martin Behunin and Ardella Ortega Behunin, sisters Peggy and Linda and brother Jesse and many caring friends in Utah and Nebraska.
Sheldon will be laid to rest in Omaha, Nebraska with full military honors. Military Graveside Service: Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 1:00 PM at at Omaha National Cemetery (14250 Schram Road Omaha, NE).
