Robert Howard Lohrberg
December 11, 1930 - August 5, 2021.
Bob was born and raised in Lincoln, NE to parents Lee and Marie Lohrberg. At Lincoln High School, he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated in 1948 and went on to study and play baseball at the University of Nebraska. He was a catcher and letter winner at Nebraska and was a member of the 1950 Big 7 baseball team, which was one game away from the College World Series. In the summer of 1951, while playing ball for the Carroll Merchants of Carroll, Iowa, Bob was drafted by the United States Army. In the service, Bob completed Officer Candidates School and attained the rank of Second Lieutenant. Following his service, Bob returned to the University of Nebraska to continue his academic and athletic career. He graduated with a Bachelors of Education in 1954, followed by his Masters and then Doctorate of Education in 1974. He was never comfortable being referred to as “Doctor”.
Bob was very proud of his career in education and always enjoyed hearing from or about former students. He spent his career teaching and coaching at Lutheran High School in Houston, Texas, Irving Junior High in Lincoln, and Lincoln Southeast, where he was the varsity basketball coach for six years. He took his first administrative job as Activities Director in Sidney, Nebraska, served as Principal at Auburn High School, and ended his career as the Director of Administrative Services at Wayne State College.
Bob was a confirmed bachelor until he met Marilyn Alexander Bassett, whom he married in 1967. He became an instant father as five year old Cecil was part of the deal. Ted was born the next year. He was a loving father and husband, and also particularly enjoyed his grandsons, Caleb and Aaron Lohrberg. He also loved baseball, tennis, football, and ice cream.
After retiring, Bob and Marilyn returned to Lincoln. Bob worked as an Assistant Sergeant at Arms for the Nebraska Legislature for many years. He also kept active as a season ticket holder to Nebraska football, basketball and baseball for many years. He was not just a spectator as he continued to play tennis until November of 2020, a month before his 90th birthday.
Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn, his sons Cecil Bassett (Russ) of Edina, Minnesota, Ted Lohrberg (Kim) of Norfolk, grandsons Caleb of Lincoln and Aaron of Norfolk. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Hutson, Denver and many nieces and nephews. He has been preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Charlene, and brother Don.
