Marty J. Urbanek

October 26, 1961 ~ October 30, 2020 (age 59)

Obituary

Marty J Urbanek, 59, passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on October 30, 2020 after a six-year battle with end-stage renal disease.  He was born on October 26, 1961 to Dorothy C. Bellows at Providence Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Marty was raised by his mother in the Lincoln, NE and the Bennington, KS areas and he attended South Salina High School.  He made his home in Salina, KS before moving to Crete, NE in 1993. He was employed by Dillard’s department stores until 1995 when he started working at Ameritas Life Insurance as an IT Operator.  It was at Ameritas that he met his wife of 20 years, Wendy.  Marty and Wendy married on July 15, 2000.

Marty continued to work and have dialysis treatments until 2018 when he retired after an unexpected heart attack.  The last two years of his life were spent being a “house husband” and traveling with his wife whenever possible.  He endured dialysis treatments just to have more time with his family.

Marty enjoyed being outside - the hotter the better; he loved golfing, fishing and attending baseball games with family and friends.  People always commented on how tan he was from all his time outside.  Marty made everyone feel welcome with his easy way and infectious smile and laugh.  He attended many College World Series games, the 2014 World Series in Kansas City, MO and the 2020 Hoag Classic SPGA tournament in Newport Beach, CA.

Marty was proud to be a volunteer firefighter for Crete Fire and Rescue (2007 – 2013) and achieved the rank of Rescue 2nd Lieutenant.  He was so dedicated to the Department and many of his fellow firefighters became like brothers and sisters.  We were very privileged to have five of them transport him home from the hospital to begin his final days under hospice care.

Marty was proceeded in death by his mother, Dorothy.  He told many of us that all he wanted to play cribbage with his Mom when he got to Heaven.

Marty is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy (Schwab) Urbanek, Lincoln, NE and his five beloved children:  sons Shelby (Bethany) Urbanek, Grandview, MO; Kirby (Alicia) Urbanek, Kansas City, MO; daughters Abby Urbanek, West Des Moines, IA; Aimee (Max) Schwab-McCoy, Omaha, NE; and Emilee Urbanek, Omaha, NE.  Marty cherished the time he spent with his six grandchildren: Jonathan, Calvin, Aderyn and Theoden Urbanek; Lincoln McCoy and Keyana Schultz.

Marty is also survived by his two sisters, Karen Leffler and Shirley (Tom) Kaufman, Lincoln, NE; his brother Robert (Tammy) Urbanek, Monument, CO and his sister-in-law Jeri Urbom, Lincoln, NE.  Included in his heart were many cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as his honorary daughter Ashley Schultz, Arvada, CO.  Marty’s three dogs Beastie, Belle and Chip were always by his side or on his lap.

A celebration of life is planned for Summer 2021. Tributes and Condolences may be left online to the family at www.lincolnccfh.com

In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family asks well-wishers to consider making a donation to the National Kidney Foundation, Dent Disease Foundation or your local Fire Department.
