Lois Miriam Johnsgard died October 30, 2021, in Lincoln, NE. She was born October 1, 1932, in Dubuque, IA, to Reuben Kenneth Lampe and Miriam Louisa (Barta) Lampe.  Her parents were both very involved in Scouting and taught Lois a deep appreciation for the outdoors and for botany in particular.

Lois graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1950 and completed a Bachelor’s of Science degree in biology (1954) at Beloit College in Beloit, WI.  While attending Washington State College (now W.S.U.) in Pullman, WA, Lois met fellow graduate student Paul Austin Johnsgard of Christine, ND in the campus Nature Club.  In 1956, she earned a Master’s of Science degree in botany.  Immediately following her graduation, Paul and Lois were married and moved to Ithaca, NY where Paul completed a Ph.D. at Cornell University.  They then moved to Dursley, England where Paul did two years of post-doctoral research.  In 1961 her husband accepted a faculty position at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where they raised their family.

During her 60 years in Lincoln, Lois volunteered extensively with the local Girl Scout Council, earning a 50-year Lifetime Service Award.  She was a Troop Leader, Outdoor Trainer, Day Camp Director, and a Silver Trefoil Member.  She served very actively at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, in many different capacities such as Sunday school teacher for 24 years, as a Bethel teacher, in the Altar Guild, Quilting Group, Ruth Circle, Library cataloger, and on the Hospitality Team.  She was President of the Lincoln German Club, founder of the Lincoln Branch of the Lois Club, Director of Church Women United in Nebraska, and a member of Wesleyan Women.  She delivered for Meals-on-Wheels for many years, and collected door-to-door for numerous worthy causes, such as March of Dimes, Red Cross, and Easter Seals. She was involved in other volunteer roles in The Lincoln Public Schools, Boy Scouts of America, the Lincoln Recycling Center, League of Women Voters, and others.  Lois loved gardening, quilting, baking, reading, card games, puzzles, history, theology, swimming, camping, traveling with her family, and spending time with her grandchildren.  Lois was kind, compassionate, welcoming, resilient, deeply spiritual, and shared her great joy in the beauty of God’s creation.

Lois is survived by three children: Scott Kenneth Johnsgard (Spring, TX), Ann Yvonne Bouma (Lincoln, NE), and Karin Luisa Johnsgard (Street, MD); six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 64 years, her son Jay Erik Johnsgard, and her grandson Scott Kenneth Gregory Johnsgard, Jr.
