Obituary for William Harry Schaffhausen

William “Bill” Schauffhausen was born to Robert and Anna Schaffhausen on September 9th, 1930 in St. Paul, Minnesota where he and his sisters were raised. He was the youngest of four children.

Upon graduation from high school, Bill joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for over 20 years. During his time in the armed forces, Bill was recognized for several major achievements and awards. As Major Command (MAJCOM), historically the highest level of command second only to Headquarters Air Force (HAF), Bill’s wing unit logged over 1000 combat flight hours. His wing unit was one of three air fueling units along with 22 B-47 bombers to receive this recognition. Honorably held in confidence for much of he and his wife’s life, revealed only to his family through VA military records, Bill was also an active member on the Bell X-1 Project, breaking the sound barrier alongside Chuck Yeager. He was one of two flight engineers to be selected for this highly secret project. Other medals and badges received during his service in the United States Air Force include the National Defence Service Medal with 1BSS, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 1OLC (May 1, 1965 - April 30, 1968), Air Medal; Special Ops G-9 (Hq Military Airlift Command), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Crew Resource Management (CRM). AFM 900-3.
